the poet in me

While living in St George we decided we'd help clean out some areas of my parent's house.  The big one was the garage and we are going to finish TODAY!  Wow, it was a lot of work, most of which Perris did.  He's my man.  Yesterday I was going through some stuff and I found an old poetry project I did my freshman year of high school.  I read through some of them and saw my teacher had said he liked most my metaphor poem.  So I found it and this is what it says:
My family is a report, no doubt.
Dad is the cover big and strong,
Mom is the preface telling us what we are about,
My twin sisters are the edit marks,
telling us when we are wrong.

Jami is the opinion always speaking her mind,
Lyndsey is the doubled letters,
always copying me and my friends,
Katie is the run on sentences that wind and wind,
And I am the closing, praying that it never ends.
I felt quite impressed with my 14 year old words and read it to P.  Now I share with you my sonnet, most appropriate as we all are waiting to hear how it goes with miss Katie in surgery right now in Ohio.  We sure love her.
Five Plus One
Five kids plus one more, a sweet little girl,
She joined us filling lots of lives with joy.
She gives of more light than a gem or a pearl,
Spending more energy than a wound toy.

Now four years old, always making a mess,
It's impossible not to be smitten.
She's a little miracle sent to bless,
A tiny girl as soft as a kitten.

With her we know we will never go wrong,
We all have something that's really great.
Her appearance brings her spirit so strong,
And makes you feel you have met by fate.

We added a child; I'm so glad we did.
There were already five, what's one more kid?
Basically I'm a modern day Shakespeare!

  2. Wow - I did not remember you were such a poet! Those were both really touching, as I sit here waiting to hear how that little Katie did in surgery. She really has an impact on the heart, as do ALL of you girls! Love, Dad
